Kukui oil is one of the more popular oils for stretch marks, particularly among pregnant women. The question is: what can it actually do, and where do its limits lie? This guide gives you an honest answer based on what we know about how stretch marks form and what oils can and cannot do.

What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks (striae) form when skin is stretched rapidly and the collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis tear. This happens during pregnancy, puberty, rapid weight gain or loss, and intense muscle growth. The skin surface stays intact, but the deeper layers show micro-tears that the body repairs with a different type of collagen — resulting in the visible lines.

Fresh stretch marks are usually red, purple or pink. Over time they fade to silver-white. That colour change is important: it shows that the wound has healed and the tissue has remodelled. At that stage, topical products have much less effect.

What Kukui Oil Can Do

Kukui oil cannot reverse stretch marks. No topical oil can — the damage is too deep in the skin. What it can do:

1. Improve skin elasticity before stretch marks form Kukui oil is rich in linoleic acid (40-45%) and omega-3 fatty acids (28%), both of which support the integrity of the skin barrier. Skin that is well-hydrated and has a strong barrier stretches better and is less likely to tear. This is why regular oil application during pregnancy or periods of weight change makes sense as prevention.

2. Reduce redness of fresh stretch marks The omega-3 in kukui oil has calming properties. On fresh, red or purple stretch marks, regular application can reduce inflammation and redness. The marks may fade more quickly to a neutral tone.

3. Relieve itching Stretching skin often itches. That itch is a sign of dryness and micro-stress in the skin. Kukui oil resolves that dryness quickly due to its light, quickly absorbed texture.

Honest expectation: If you already have established, silver-white stretch marks, kukui oil will keep the skin soft and hydrated, but it will not make the marks disappear. For that you would need dermatological treatments such as laser therapy or microneedling.

How to Apply Kukui Oil for Stretch Marks

Step 1: Apply to clean, slightly damp skin. The moisture helps the oil absorb better.

Step 2: Pour 5 to 8 drops into your palm and warm between your hands.

Step 3: Massage into the skin with circular movements for 2 to 3 minutes. Focus on areas where stretch marks commonly appear: belly, hips, breasts, thighs, and lower back.

Step 4: Repeat morning and evening. During pregnancy, from the second trimester onwards is a good time to start.

Kukui oil and rosehip oil are a good combination for stretch marks: kukui for daily hydration and barrier support, rosehip for cell renewal. Apply kukui first, then a drop of rosehip on top.

Frequently asked questions

Does kukui oil remove stretch marks?

No oil can remove stretch marks. Stretch marks are a form of scarring in the deeper dermis layer of the skin. Topical oils cannot reach that layer. Kukui oil can improve the hydration and elasticity of the skin, which may help prevent new stretch marks from forming and can reduce the redness of early, fresh marks. Older, silver-white stretch marks are very difficult to affect with topical products.

When is the best time to apply kukui oil for stretch marks?

The earlier the better. Apply kukui oil during pregnancy, during periods of rapid weight change, or the moment you notice the first redness or slight tearing of the skin. Fresh, red or purple stretch marks respond better to moisturising than older, white marks.

How often should I apply kukui oil for stretch marks?

Twice a day gives the best results: once in the morning and once in the evening. Massage the oil into the skin for 2 to 3 minutes to improve circulation and absorption. Consistency is key. A single application now and then will have little effect.

Is kukui oil safe to use during pregnancy?

Kukui oil is a pure plant oil with no known risks for topical use during pregnancy. It contains no hormonal substances or synthetic additives. If you use kukui oil as part of a blend with essential oils, check which essential oils are safe during pregnancy. Pure kukui oil itself is considered safe. Always consult your midwife or doctor if you have specific concerns.
